Questions about Rankings and MBA vs CPA

by Eva76 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:55 pm
Hello Guys,

I am looking forward to have words of wisdom about business schools and the how far the rankings matter.
Any advice will help relieve the immense decision pressure I am in these days.
I have two queries:

First is that I got accepted at Daniels School of Business- University of Denver.
I am still awaiting decisions from UNC Kenan-Flagler and McCombs.
The last two are better ranked than Daniels School.
My question is how much the ranking of Daniels School will affect my future?
Despite it is lower in ranking it suits my personal situation. I will be 1.5 hours flight away from home and its important that I stay close to my family. I intend to stay in the central US in both near and far future. Should I really chase a nationally ranked school to compete for jobs in TX, OK, CO, KS?
(I have an engineering bachelors)

Secondly, I also intend to do CPA exam no matter which MBA program I go to.
So if anyone can also offer advice whether first do CPA or an MBA? (I am close to 150 credit hours for CPA)
I was thinking do CPA, defer MBA for now, get experience in accounting and then go for MBA at a later stage.
But since I have already applied to B Schools I am in a dichotomy. If I get accepted and deny each acceptance for CPA I might be putting myself in a closed corner.

What do you guys think?
Any word of advice will help me a lot.
Awaiting help.... Eva

Firstly, it's always better to go to a highly ranked school than to go to a school which is almost unknown. The kind of opportunities you'll have when you graduate from a top rung school are enormous ;though it's upto you how well do you use those opportunities. I don't think that the business school at University of Denver figures even among the top 100 ,so am not sure how much value it'd add to your profile.
However, since you have your own priorities that you wanna stay close to your home and see yourself working in a particular region, you may wanna consider that.
I think that you should go for your CPA now instead of hastening to go to a low ranked MBA program. A CPA degree will definitely add a lot of credibility to your profile. It'll be immensely helpful even if you plan to go for MBA later as it's pretty much valued by prospective employers .

Also, McCombs and Kenan-Flagler are two of the top accounting programs in the country. You will definitely find more opportunities attending one of those schools.
