HBS Executive Programs

by spencerj » Wed Feb 16, 2011 9:38 am
Hi there,

I am wondering if you are familiar at all with the admissions process for HBS's executive education programs like the:
Advanced Management Program
General Management Program
Owner/President Program
Program for Leadership Development

Here are some of my stats:
BA Economics
Consultant for Technology advisory
Executive for Private Equity advisory
Senior VP for Private Equity Derivatives firm
President of a Private Equity Association with ~30 members managing ~20 billion.
~10 years as an executive (32 years old) in total

I can't find much information on any of the executive program's admission criteria/stats/anything!

My biggest concern is that I am too young, but I would like to do it now if possible. Also, the association that I am running is a non-profit, but I am pretty sure they accept these types of executives.

My first choice would be the Advanced Management Program, but if I cannot get into that, then I would settle for any of the others. I think I saw a stat saying that the average age for AMP is 45! Do I have a shot?

Please could you give me any information on their admission criteria or direction to where I could find more info on this?

Many thanks
Spencer

Spencer,

HBS is deliberately vague in their requirements for the AMP because they are open to younger applicants. The key thing is that your accomplishments be significant enough to justify your inclusion with accomplished, somewhat older executives -- and the profile you provided suggests that your accomplishments are strong enough. You will need a sponsoring organization and an executive there must nominate you. Of course it's fine if your organization is a non-profit (even helps you because you'll stand out a bit). So I do think you have a shot. You can call the AMP directly and ask them your questions, at 1-800-427-5577.

As for the other three Executive Education programs you mentioned, given your profile, you should be able to gain entry into any of them. These are, frankly, much more 'pay to play' programs, so if you don't happen to get into one of these for their next schedule slot, you would mostly likely get into the next one. These are not as selective.

Hope this helps,
