I'm in the very early stages of preparing to apply to MBA programs (I haven't yet taken the GMAT).

Ethnicity: Bi-Racial (Chinese and Caucasian, born in USA).

Age: 25

Nice profile!!!
You have the school, the grades, the volunteer work, the job and the background.
which means that if you hit 720+ and make a seamless application, Top 10 is the way for you to go!!!
How to improve? Right now: the GMAT. Everything else is secondary. Once that's out of the way, you can worry about everything else,

Thanks, Jon. Taking a GMAT prep course now and will aim to take the actual test mid/late spring. You've confirmed my suspicion that the GMAT should be my sole focus right now.

From your response, I gather that working in the legal/compliance function and looking at an MBA as a pivot doesn't put me at a disadvantage.

On the contrary, legal/compliance is cool. Not many people have the legal/biz combo, and if you play it as an advantage in your essays, it will be perceived as one.
