Where is the question from please? I can pretty much guarantee that the answer next to the check mark (D) would not be a right answer on the GMAT. Past and past perfect are required here: "Before she became respected, George had been a translator"

The answer is indeed A. Thanks for letting me know which rule applied here. The marking of D is what I marked. What is encircled is what is correct, which in this case is A.

Aah, it was my mistake. I was careless. Yes verb tense is incorrect in D :-)
