like is used for comparing nouns/similar objects.

we are giving an example of 'densely populated conuntries' in this sentence, hence we have to use such as instead of like

so a & b are out.

I thought that names of countries are nouns? Specifically, they are called "proper nouns".

Am I wrong?

Well in this question you are comparing Philippines with densely populated countries and not with Thailand and Indonesia.

But if you use 'like' it means you are trying to show a similarity only between Philippines and Thailand & Indonesia and not considering the other densely populated countries.

In this sentence, as uttara pointed out, Thailand and Indonesia are used as examples and examples are always introduced with 'such as' and never with 'like'.
