Numerous times taking the GMAT question

by mpb » Wed May 13, 2009 1:46 pm
Stacy,

I took the the GMAT for the 4th time and I canceled my score because I
was not confident in my Quant score.

My first three GMATs were as follows:

Overall Quant Verbal
510 31 (30%) 29 (53%)
530 31 (30%) 31 (58%)
550 38 (53%) 27 (51%)

I really should not have taken the exam these 3 times as I was sufficiently unprepared. Since my third time taking it I've been working with Kaplan and have been scoring mostly between 630 and 650 on their practice tests (including 650 on a GMATPrep practice test).

Since I was not confident in my Quant score on my most recent exam, I figured that it was best to cancel the score than risk getting another low score. Assuming that the next time I take the GMAT I score well, how do you think Admissions Committees will view three poor scores and one canceled score?

My undergraduate GPA about 3.5 and from a good school. I am not a very good standardized test taker. Please help. Thank you.

Dear mpb,

Most schools use only your highest total score in your evaluation. So, in your case, that would be your 550. While they will see you have taken the test more than once, that is not generally a negative. What is most important is that you have a GMAT score that you feel is close to an accurate reflection of your academic aptitude. Remember, the GMAT is one piece of the application and decisions are not usually made on that number alone. Your transcript(s), resume, recommendations, essays and interviews will also play a critical role in the process, and you can use those as a chance to make your compelling case for admission.

Good luck,
Lisa
