More than 30 years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump", as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another

A ...

B like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another

C as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others

D like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others

E as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one


If somebody could explain to me why OA is B that would be great!

IMO it's C because 'like' is used to compare nouns and 'as' is used to compare actions and here it's a comparison of being able to move.

B is correct, because it sets up an analogy: the genes are like pearls. A seems to be saying that the genes take the form of pearls, which is not correct, and all of the other choices seem to be setting up not an analogy, but instead a comparison. They all talk, in some way, about 'pearls that move...' and since pearls don't actually move from one necklace to another, the comparison is illogical. B is the only choice that correctly addresses the analogy of the genes to a hypothetical situation with pearls.
