more than vs greater than

I had seen below question in GMAT official guide 2017.
A long term study of some 1,000 physicians indicates that the more coffee these doctors drank, the more they had a likelihood of coronary disease.

They have given answer as greater was the likelihood of having coronary disease.

Can some body explain why can't we use more was their likelihood...

likelihood is a numerical quantity.
for comparisons involving numerical quantities, more cannot be used. We use greater for this purpose

one number is more than another number--> incorrect
one number is greater than another number--> correct
