Hi All,

What a great forum you have here! I know that this will be the first of many posts...

Out of curiosity, what value do adcoms place on the reputation(s) of a candidate's previous employer(s)? For example, I recently turned down an offer from Deloitte Consulting to stay with my current company (a much smaller, but well respected energy consultancy).

All other qualifications being equal, would the adcoms at the Ivy League schools prefer a candidate from a big name firm like Deloitte, or would they look favorably upon someone from a smaller/boutique firm (approximately 300-400 employees)?

Thank you in advance for sharing your insights with me.

Hi NicB,

Well, I think reputation does matter, but on the other hand, the admisisons committee will have seen a lot of applicants from Deloitte and much less from your firm. Therefore, you will have the "standing out from the crowd" points to work with.

What is really important is the progression you have shown in your career (have you been promoted quickly? Taken on responsibility proactively?) and how well you articulate your goals and leadership and management potential.

Good luck!
