Closed-circuit televisions

by crackgmat007 » Sun May 31, 2009 8:18 am
A year after the start an experiment to decrease crime in two high-crime subway stations by the installation of closed-circuit televisions, the experiment is being discontinued, city officials say the program has led to an increase in crime, citing the fact that following the installation, both stations showed increases in the number of crimes reported.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the claim of the city officials that the program has led to an increase in crime?
(A) The two subway stations had been chosen on the basis subway stations was higher than that of other high-crime subway stations not equipped with closed-circuit-television.
(B) The rate of increase in crimes reported for two subway stations was higher than that of other high-crime subway stations not equipped with closed-circuit television.
(C) The percentage of all crimes committed at the two subway stations that were reported rose as a result of increased instances of observations of crime on the closed-circuit televisions.
(D) The year in which the experiment was conducted was a year in which the total number of crimes reported in the city fell.
(E) Closed-circuit televisions installed in shops and stores throughout the city have proved to be useful in the prevention of shoplifting and burglaries.

the question is asking how the statement is weakened but not what is the function or benefit of CC cameras..
i think E doesn't make any sense in weakening the argument as it argument states that camera has effect on the crime.. C weakens it but i think E supports it..

I guess am missing something. Pls see my analysis

Conclusion - city officials say the program has led to an increase in crime

To weaken this conclusion, the answer choice that states that CCTV infact reduced the crime rather than increasing the crime would be a good match. E does the job.

Pls let me know where I am missing. Tx.

I am not a GMAT expert, hope this will help you -

Argument says - CCTV's will be taken off from the subways because the number of crimes has increased since they were installed.

you need to find an answer choice that weakens the argument, what if because of CCTV's there are more crimes that are reported because they can be traced, overall there is no increase in the number of crimes.

C points out this logical gap in the reasoning. E is irrelevant to the argument here.

The officials conclude that there is an increase in crime due to CC tv installation. They support that by the fact that the reporting rate has increased.

However, it might be the case that without CC TV not all crimes were identified and as a result reported due to limited observation. C supports this explanation and therefore weakens the argument.

E - is out of scope as it is not related to this case

It may have reduced the total number of shoplifting occurrences and burglaries, but this isn't the only type of crime.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

nswer E seems to be logical one out of other answer choices
