56.Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.
(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive
(E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids

Whats worng with B.. Please explain.

A

In B, the gerund producing is modifying water vapour here as it is not separated by a comma, so it modifies the noun next to it

With minor modification to B , wherein a comma added before producing form a proper sentence?

between X (industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) and Y (atmospheric water vapor) is the correct structure. hence we can safely eliminate A and B.

If this is what you meant,

Yes this sentence is correct as now producing modifies the subject 'Acid rain and snow'

Option B is incorrect because it distorts the actual meaning of the sentence.

The actual meaning is -- Acid rain and snow results from the chemical reactions between X and Y to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids. -- Chemical reactions results in highly corrosive and sulfuric and nitric acids.

If you read the option B carefully it changes the meaning to say that water vapor is producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids


PS: Option A is also incorrect. We are using between here. So we need 'and' and not 'with'

It is the reaction between Industrial emissions and atmospheric water vapor.

Here: Industrial emissions comprises of "sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides" -- That's one entity.

I'm going with C.

The "to produce" thing doesn't sound right. A and E are out.

B would be right if it had a comma.

D would be right but they tack on extra words at the end, so I killed it.
