Lack of promotions

by kcw984 » Sun Aug 05, 2012 10:01 am
Hi Jon,

Thanks for your time and insight. Just a quick question: what are your thoughts regarding work promotions and their effect on one's MBA candidacy? I've been working for ~4.5 years, and although I am able to demonstrate steadily increasing responsibility (and greatly increased responsibility over the past year), I have never been formally promoted. Essentially, my problem is that I was meant to be promoted at the end of last year, but my department doesn't have the budget/resources to make this happen. Although I realize this is only one part of my application, I'm wondering if this is a negative? If so, is there anything I can do to mitigate this?

Thanks,
Kcw984

Well "not having a promotion" can't really be a negative, because nobody knows how many promotions you SHOULD have. So get that thought out of your head! What you need to do, is take what you DO have (your increase in responsibilities) and use that to show progress as much as possible. The key is in your uplifting and positive approach, and that you should PROVEN advancement (increasing leads, increasing project size etc. etc.)

Hope this helps!
