strange question.....

by voodoo_child » Sat Jun 18, 2011 7:11 pm
The best female students of science are increasingly choosing medical school over nursing school, while nursing is still largely viewed as a profession for females; the result of these two simultaneous phenomena are a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors.

the result of these two simultaneous phenomena are a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors
the result of these two simultaneous phenomena are that there are not enough nurses and there are an increasing number of female doctors
the result of these two simultaneous phenomena is a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors
these two simultaneous phenomena are resulting in a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors
these two simultaneous phenomena, the result of which is a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors

OA - C

The peculiarity of this example is that OE says "Option D is awkward" :D

Please post your analysis

Thanks

IMO C
A,B and C are in the hunt because they are in active speech ....D and E are in passive mode and in GMAT active always prevails over passive.

Now look at all the 3 options we have shortlisted :-
the result of these two simultaneous phenomena are a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors....(result can't be plural)
the result of these two simultaneous phenomena are that there are not enough nurses and there are an increasing number of female doctors.....wordy and awkward option
the result of these two simultaneous phenomena is a shortage of nurses and an increasing number of female doctors ....correct

If you are confused, first try POE strategy. A and B are wrong; "the result" is a singular noun. E is a fragmented/run-off sentence. Now, you are down to C and D. abhishek.pati's analysis of D is correct. D is too wordy and and awkward. C, on the other hand, is very clear. Choose C.

If you look at the verbs used in D, "these _____ are resulting" - is a awkward and wordy. In C, it boils down to "the result ___ is". Concise and simple.
