hi!i'm a beginner..help needed..please..

hi everyone..i've just finished my engineering in electronics..i have an IT job offer in hand and i will be joining the company in january..i plan to to take an mba after 3 years(since colleges ask for work experience)..i want to take the gmat before joining the company..i have about 5 months of preparing time..my aim is to get a score of 700+..i've been reading posts and browsing different sites for a while now..i've read ursulas and spideys posts..all were informative..is it enough if i prepare ONLY from the official guide 12th edition??i plan to do each and every question of the book..i dont know if i'm being overambitious dreaming a 700+ score by only preparing the official guide 12th edition..but i really need to know if its enough...please help me as soon as possible..

As per my perception and view, i guess you should take the exam before applying for the colleges. It would represent your score at that point of time. Agreed that you have time at hand, but three yaers is long. It might happen that you end up changing gears.

And as of the preparation and scoring a 700+, i am myself a newbie planning to down the marathon. All i can suggest to you is what i have planned for myself. Go for princeton review materials and complete the Official guide and take an exam offered from GMAC. See where you are. Then go for kaplan which is considered tougher than the original exam and give the exam a shot only when u are done with Kaplan. I advice so because i feel Princeton and Kaplan can be well used to gauge your progress and tougness of the exam.

thanks for the reply sandy...i've made up my mind to do an mba..so my views wont change after 3 years,no matter what...i've heard that once we enter a job it'll be difficult to prepare for the gmat due to lack of time...thats what made me think to take the exam before joining the company..will it go against me if i take the gmat in december??

Hi,

It's nothing like if you are working you can't prepare. It just needs focus and two hours each day.
I am at a job for the last three years and i think i can pull in more than three-four hours. I guess it all depends on how badly you want things.

Nothing wrong in going for the exam this December. You have hell lot of time till you apply for colleges. I feel a recent score is best. So i expressed that. It all depends on how you want things to be.

thanks sandy for the reply..i have 5 months in hand..didnt want to waste it simply..thats why i thought of taking the gmat now...i can devote myself to preparations atleast 6hrs a day now..if i study from the official guide and all available free online resources will it suffice??is it necessary to buy the princeton review and kaplan??what do you feel?can you also please let me know the cost of the princeton and kaplan materials..please help..

Hi,

I feel that Princeton is required for people who aren't exactly aware of what GMAT tests like verbal and quant skills. I don't think that a GMAT preparation can work without princeton. It's my personal favorite for building up ground skills. Once i know am good in identifying the principles involved, i prefer going for Kaplan to test myself against something tough. the more you train, the more you can last.
