the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively and it was a major cause of the 1999 strike in Seattle.

A.same
B. communication between the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively and it
C. for the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively
D.the inability of the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively
E. the machine press union,being unable to communicate effectively with company management.

plz explain yr answer

Please underline the incorrect portion of the sentence. You have neither underlined nor given option A.

A.the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively and it was a major cause of the 1999 strike in Seattle. --> INCORRECT: "IT" has no refferent, 'it' should ideally point to communication, which is not the noun over here.

B. communication between the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively and it -->INCORRECT: communication and communicate is repeated makes it awkward.

C. for the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively-->CORRECT: The sentence is a passive structure and conveys the meaning. Also 'for' seems to stands for because over here.

D.the inability of the machine press union and company management were not able to communicate effectively-->INCORRECT:'the inability" has the plural verb "were"

E. the machine press union,being unable to communicate effectively with company management. -->INCORRECT: the verb 'was' seems to refer to "the machine press union" while the communication seems to be the problem.

IMO C..Whats the OA?
btw, where does this item comes from?
