Verbal Statergies ??? Please Suggest

by subhasis8877 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 4:00 am
Hi,
As an engineer,I can manage Quantitative section.Verbal kills me. From a month, i have been reading and practicing following guides.

1. Kaplan 2009 premier Edition.
2. Manhattan SC book
3. Power score CR bible
4. OG 11

The major weekeness of mine is CR and RC.While Practicing in OG, i got half of the question wrong and half of the question correct. I have a good grasp of SC

I am ready to give my 100% effort.I am ready to read each and everything. But it doesn't seem to work for me.

Where i am going wrong ? Is anybody faced the same situtaion as i am facing.

I have another 3 and Half months to go.Is practicing the questions hard will sove my problem ?[Note : I know the each and every question type]

I have read Powerscore Crtical Reasoning Bible. It gave me a lot of statergies to attack questions. But i am not seeing any significant improvement in verbal.

Please suggest, what to do and how to do ?

CR and RC can indeed be difficult sections to master. Unfortunately, what really works for these sections is just practice, practice, and more practice.

Start reading dense and complex articles, works of literature and etc etc to get into the practice of keeping your concentration level up during the exam. This will also allow you to rather quickly pick up on the main points and nuances of the reading passages you may come across.

Good luck!

For my verbal prep I used ManhattanGMAT Sentence Correction guide, The Official Guide, and gmatfix verbal flashcards.

1) If you don't already have it, consider getting the ManhattanGMAT SC guide and go through its lessons.

2) Get the gmatfix verbal flashcards (you can evaluate some for free); these cards are broken down into SC subtopics, with each topic giving you loads of examples and pinpointed lessons on how the topic is tested on the GMAT

3) Once you can go through the flashcards for a particular topic without error, use the Manhattan guide to find the specific questions in the OG that test the topic you're studying. Practice those questions and study the explanations carefully.

This is just a snippet; you can see my full debrief at www.tinyurl.com/gmatpost where I point out what worked from what didn't work for me.

Best of luck :-)

subhasis8877,

I would strongly encourage you to get the Verbal Official Guide as that has a lot of questions. For me, I have worked a lot of LSAT logical reasoning questions in order to better understand the Critical Reasoning question type.

Can you suggest what's the difference between Offcial guide 11(verbal +quant) and Official guide to verbal.I have not find any difference between the quantitative section of OG11 and Official guide for quantitative section.

Also,I have some LSAT questions.Don't know where to start with.I heard a lot about LSAT reasoning types.Do u have any link, where i can download the LSAT reasoning questions.

There's really no difference between the big OG and the quant and verbal ones. They simply contain different questions.
