The first commercially successful drama to depict Black family life sympathetically and the first play by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway, it was Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun that won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959, and was later made into both a film and a musical.

D should be the answer.

E is tempting if you dont read that sentence till the end.

Well, I picked E to make sure 'A Raisin in the Sun' is the noun that is is modified.

Couldnt make up my mind between D/E. 'It' in option E is ambigious too.

E is wrong because of the following phrase "and later made it" ?

Who made it ? the drama itself made "it" to film and musical !

Only D survives.

I came up with this question and was confused after going through all the discussion about this question. Just to keep it simple.

Clearly, only D and E are contenders.Lets take a look on both these options.

The first commercially successful drama to depict Black family life sympathetically and the first play by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959 and was later made into both a film and a musical.

Clearly, the sentence must begin with A Raisin in the Sun

This error is removed by E. However, E makes another mistake.

E.

A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959, and later made it

the bold part in E creates a problem.

I feel this question is another one from the BAD QUESTIONS League

I want your opinion on this.

I don't think so. In option D, the subject is still "A rasin in the Sun".

In option E, the second parallel part of the sentence "later made it" seems to say that book itself made into film and musical, which is not intended. There is a need of passive voice construction to correct this; that is there in option D.

why can it not be said in this way ? in other words what is wrong with option B.
