Devasted by GMAT - What can I do?

by FunkleKnuckle » Sat Nov 17, 2007 2:58 pm
After two months of studying I took my test today and achieved a score considerably lower than either of my GMATPrep tests and MGMAT tests. I scored a 650 (44Q, 35V) on my GMATprep test two days ago but just a 570 (34Q, 35V) on the real deal. My verbal score was in line with my expectations, but as you can see, my math score plummeted.

I obviously want to retake the test but I am not sure how to re-study math. I don't even know where I went wrong today. I've exhausted the OG and it's supplements and the Kaplan 800. I originally based my study on the MGMAT books, so I can't turn to those either.

My major problem is I didn't have much trouble answering the OG questions or the Kaplan 800. I got about 85-90% of all those questions right the first time through. So I was fairly confident I would do well with quant, but I felt like none of the questions I saw today were remotely similar to the ones in the OG. I couldn't solve the first one and then it was all downhill from there.

Has anyone else had this experience, and if so do you have any thoughts on how I can re-attack this exam?

I understand well your frustration.

Good that you have decided to retake the exam. I suggest you do good introspection on what might have gone wrong on the actual exam. Did you get to complete the section? Did you end up guessing too many questions? You have stated that the questions were unfamiliar and that might have made you tensed I guess.

You could try to recollect the areas from which the quant questions were based. You could concentrate on these areas in addition to other known weak areas. Brush up on strong subjects too. You should be able to take educated guess on the difficult questions (probably 2-3 of them). If you guess on too many questions, it is a sign of weakness in the subject matter.

If you need help in specific areas, members of the forum would be glad to help.

Hi

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Regarding your test, can you tell us a bit more on the type of question you got on the test? In what way were they different for the OG material? Were they worded differently? Or just more difficult or different concepts? I am sure if you want some help in specific areas you can find the question type on the forum.

Best of luck

While I won't test for quite some time, I too fall into this same category (completed OG & supps, Kap800 and MGMAT books). I'm looking for a larger source of questions representative of those found on the gmat. Have others come to this point? What do you do next?

As a side note, I'm considering the Bell Curves online question bank, something like 3000+ questions, unsure if they rep other gmat questions or explain answers.
