690 (87 percentile,Q47,V38) but Bombed IR and AWA

Hi,

I took the GMAT for the first time and made a
690 (87 percentile,Q47,V38) but I did poorly on the AWA making a 4.5 and even worse on the IR with a scaled score of 4 (37%) percentile.

Are these scores good for a top 50 MBA school? Should I take the test again? How important is the IR and the AWA?

I dont want to put too much time into GMAT as my work is very demanding and I dont have too much time to spend on it. If I can avoid retaking the test I would like to do so.


Further background (if it helps):

I made a 3.4 GPA at the Georgia Institute of Technology earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (my last 6 semesters there have an avg. GPA of 3.8). I currently am a Senior Electrical Engineer with 6 years of experience in the semiconductor field.

Hey Mark,
Well the regular score is far more important than either the AWA or IR although it will have some effect. I think if you are aiming for 20-50 and your work experience is good, you should still be okay. And you should only retake the GMAT if you believe you can get at least 20 points higher on the main score. Then it would be totally worth it.

Mark,

Your GMAT should be sufficient for the 15 - 50, especially since your quant is above 80% which is a more important metric than your AWA or IR.

I would even say that with your profile you should be aiming for schools inside the Top 25 as Georgia Institute of Technology is an excellent school.
