¦x¦=¦y¦??

by gmatmachoman » Sun Mar 28, 2010 4:08 am
Is ¦x¦=¦y¦?
(1) x - y = 6
(2) x + y = 0

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is
sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

1) Insufficient.
on first look i was tempted to say that |x| is not equal to |y| but lets take

however, x = 3, y = -3

this satisfies the equation and x and y are equal

any other numbers can satisfy the equation take x = 12, y = 6...here the mods arent equal but x-y = 6

thus Insufficient

2) x = -y

Thus |x| = |-x| = |y|
Sufficient

IMO B
