Preparation and Prediction: Seeking Advice

by razorback » Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:08 pm
Hi,

I would like advice on where I can focus my quant study over the next week.

I have been studying for the GMAT for 5 weeks, exclusively quant, and exclusively using the Manhattan GMAT volumes 1-5.

5 weeks ago I took the first free CAT exam on MGMAT. I scored a 39 in quant after only getting to question 29 (zeroed out 30 through 37).

After reading every word and exhausting every practice problem found in guides 1-5 (including those that directed me to my OG-12 and OG-QuantReview), I took the second CAT on MGMAT (yesterday) and scored a 40, an improvement of only 1 point!

Despite going through each of the 5 quant guides, I was still baffled by the majority of the 37 questions on the quant exam, and still failed to reach all 37 questions.

That being said I took my first official practice test from mba.com today and scored a 48 in quant, reaching 36 of 37 questions before quick-guessing the last question as time ran out. 30 of the 37 were correct, and only several had me baffled.

What is your take on the difference in difficulty found in the MGMAT quant prep and the real deal?

In addition, during this time, I took all 5 CAT exams offered at 800score and scored over a 43 each time, completing each in time (highest score was 45).

I have scheduled a GMAT exam for October 26th, in about 3 weeks. I had planned on crushing yesterdays Manhattan CAT quant section and shifting to two weeks of verbal, followed by a week of AWA prep.

Scoring a mid 700 is my goal for the GMAT (my verbal scores with zero focus or effort have been 40 on all three CATs). How would you tailor my preparation and focus for the next 3 weeks before the exam.

note: I dont currently work and have 8-12 hours a day to study!

I agree that the MGMAT quants are too time consuming, it may be good for practice, but are not definitely representative of the actual GMAT type questions. (I personally need atleast 10 minutes more to finish that section)
And since you have not attempted the last few questions (not even guesses) you probably had a heavy penalty on your scores. 800 score tests are too easy and you should be finishing them before time (their scoring is messed up though) IMO. 48 on GMATPrep is a good score and you have 3 weeks remaining, keep practicing my official sources for the last week or so. Try powerprep if you have not taken it yet.

I suggest a two-fold approach:

- reviewing old questions & making an Error Log, identifying the concepts you still struggle with

- keep practicing your pacing! There are a number of free CATs online: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/resources#linkcat-61

You need to be able to complete the Quant section no matter how difficult the questions. It requires a lot of discipline to be able to "move on" from a challenging question. Since the GMAT adapts, you may see 1-2 difficult questions that you cannot solve in under 2 min. In that case, make an educated guess and answer to the best of your ability. Take a couple more Quant sections with a strong eye on pacing. Be confident that no single question will be able to "throw you" on Test Day. :)
