Resume - conflicting advice

by dee123 » Fri Oct 15, 2010 2:44 pm
I am currently preparing my application to the UBC Sauder School of Business MBA program. For the resume section, every article I have ever seen with advice about an MBA admissions Resume, has said, keep it brief and make it one page only. However, on the UBC website is asks people to use the resume format they provide and they say specifically "As the content and format of resumes widely vary, we have provided a Sample Resume to assist you in composing yours for application to the UBC MBA Program. Please follow our directions and format. Your resume can either be entered directly on the application or attached."

The issue is that their format is 2 pages, and I had emailed about length and they said that the resume can be more than two pages and they responded by saying "we require applicants to list all of their previous work experiences, full-time and post-graduate work experiences being the most important ones. It is to your judgement what experiences and extracurricular activities you would like to include for our admissions committee to review."

here is their sample format:

so, does anyone have any suggestions? should I keep it to two pages? should I really include every job I have ever had? what kind of other things are relevant and what are not?

It seems like the school was pretty specific about how they want their resume formatted and what they want included, both in their e-mail to you and on the website. So, I would definitely follow that, make it 2+ pages (depending on the content) and include all of your experience.

As for what is relevant and what is not, it seems that they stated that your full-time and post-graduate experiences are most important - so definitely be thorough in that section. Beyond that, choose experiences that support your application story and highlight the qualities and skills you are trying to emphasize in your application, things that present you as an interesting, focused, successful and well-rounded applicant.

Good luck!
