I've been going back and forth about whether or not it is smart to include my involvement over the last few years in a 12-step program. I am tempted not to include it because of any red flags it might raise and because it's quite personal, except I'm actually quite proud of it. I dedicate many hours every week to it and I sponsor a few other people who are new to the program with their recovery.

Any thoughts?

Hi Ashley,

While it is very commendable you are active in the program and support others new to it, I would strongly advise you to not include it. Typically, avoid any topics that individuals have deep seated personal views on. For example, we once had a client who overcame a very serious substance addiction and wanted to write about it in their essay. However, while it was amazing they overcame it and maintained an impressive professional trajectory, it raises more questions which, when dealing with things like that, can be a very dangerous thing indeed.

Let me know if you have any questions!
