Faulty parallelism

by sang5650 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 4:22 pm
The media encourages people whether they be actors, musicians, or some other high profile vocation.

a) they be actors, musicians, or some other high profile vocation
b) there vocation be acting, music performance or some other high profile vocation.
The other answer choices were easy to eliminate, so haven't mentioned here.
What would you choose between these two?

I would choose A, but I'm curious yo know if you copied B correctly unless the GMAT was testing the difference between "their" and "there".. even still I would choose A
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

A is what I choice too. But the answer happens to be B.

You are right the B answer choice should have "their" .. sorry my typo mistake.

The answer explanation mentions B is correct because it maintains a correct parallelism with Actors, music performers and others. However that doesn't explain why A is wrong.

A is wrong because the actors, musicians are people but high profile vocation is not.
It should have been people of high profile vocation.
