I'm about to visit Owen (Vanderbilt) next week, and I'm still working on the application. I scheduled the visit a few weeks back and I just realized that I never really researched into whether I'm supposed to have finished the application or not. I don't see anywhere on the school's website that you do; however, I'm supposed to have an evaluative interview with the Director of Admissions (yikes!).

How close are these to real invites for an interview after submitting an app? Thanks for the help!

Hi again chendawg --

Yikes is right! Interviews are a big deal - you need to prepare for this! Even though Vanderbilt will interview anyone who comes to campus, that does not mean that the interview is less important than if it came about via invitation after you submitted your app. The interview is your chance to shine - it's important to deliver your story to the interviewer in way that supports the materials you'll eventually submit in the essays and other application components.

In fact, it is better to have your essays done before interviewing, since that way, you have your theme identified and your messaging established. If you're not that far along yet, then just focus intently on identifying your career goals beforehand - be sure to map those out clearly. (If you haven't done that yet, then actually you may want to sign up for our 30 Days of Essays Guided Tour - we're tackling exactly that in real time this week!! Check it out at https://30days.hoop.la /end shamless plug). If you already applied to any schools in Round 1 then you probably already have your career goals figured out, which is totally sufficient for this purpose. You'll also want to have some "why Vanderbilt?" answers prepared. If you're going through the campus tour/info session before your interview, then you'll be able to gather some on-the-ground intelligence, though scouring the website in advance can't hurt either!

And no matter what prepare, prepare, prepare! Sometimes people underestimate what's required for the interview. We had a post on this just last week: https://essaysnark.blocked/2011/10/ ... rview.html

Hope this helps - without totally freaking you out!! :-)

Thanks for the advice! I was going to go in there as if it were a real interview anyways. My real concern was whether or not my entire apps needed to be done, I'm just fine-tuning my essays at this point; after some more digging, I finally found it on the website. It doesn't need to be done.....but like you said, it IS a real interview. So I'm just getting as prepared as I can for it.....:)

Hi Chedawg,

This entirely depends college to college. We would advise you to start preparing for the interview so you are well prepared and not nervous or underprepared when the time comes. There are examples of several mock interviews that should be helpful. Stay confident and we are sure you will impress the adcom.

I guess my other real question is, what is the SOP here? Do most people do formal campus visits before or after applying to a school? I never really looked into the norm, as my thought process was if someone went to visit and totally hated the atmosphere, culture, and living situation, it would have been a waste of time if they had applied beforehand. However, I obviously wouldn't want to be viewed as unprepared in my research during my visit (I'm not hopefully, in my mind at least:-P) if I were to say I haven't finished or even started my application, if prompted.

Hey chendawg--

Visiting campus before applying is ALWAYS a good strategy -- it's one of the best ways to decide if the school is right for you, for exactly the reasons you've cited. Experiecing a school's culture firsthand is really important - many people think schools are interchangeable, and they're just not. We think it's the best way to figure out whether to even apply (we talk about it on our blog quite a bit - here's a few posts: https://essaysnark.blocked/2010/06/ ... chool.html and https://essaysnark.blocked/2011/04/school-fit.html ) AND it also can give you important insights that you can use in your app. So it's a huge advantage for the candidate, both in deciding if it's the right school for him, and then in better articulating the reasons why when developing the essays.

For schools like Owen that have these candidate-initiated interviews, no, they certainly don't expect that you'd have your application complete before you go to campus. Few people do. In fact, some schools with this interview-in-advance policy (Tuck comes to mind) specifically offer the opportunity as a way to weed out those who discover that the school isn't the right place for them. This is certainly one of the (many) reasons behind the Owen policy, too. They say it directly on their website - they want people to come find out what "Owen, Vanderbilt, and Nashville" is all about. They want to make sure that those who do apply are really in love with the place. So, offering these pre-app interviews is a win-win for everyone.

You probably should take preliminary steps towards starting your app, just in case it comes up - they won't expect that you have finished it, given how far off the next deadline is, but it would be good to have a minimally positive answer, right? ;-) However, we sincerely doubt this is going to come up. It doesn't really matter, from their perspective - you're showing great interest by making the effort to trek all the way to TN, so you've already crossed a major hurdle, in their eyes. They will be evaluating you based on how you present yourself to them (background, career goals, why Owen), not how far along you are in your application.

The main reason you might want to go through their online app in detail before heading to campus is that if they have any oddball questions in the app, you could get clarification on it directly with the admissions office. Some schools ask questions that are puzzling. Can't recall offhand if Owen has anything in that category, but getting familiar with all of it now could save you some time later.

Campus visits tend to be FUN - it's usually really energizing to be around all those smart people who are learning really cool stuff. So, do some prep now as you're doing - but then relax and enjoy it!! It's only going to help you in all aspects of your process (even if you were to decide that Owen isn't the right school for you, you will likely learn SO MUCH that you can use in your other apps that it'll be a net gain).

Good luck!

Correction: Obviously their Rd 2 deadline is not that far off, we were mistakenly thinking of Rd 3 in our comments above... They still will not expect you to have your app completed, necessarily; most people apply right around the deadline... and it's still rather unlikely that they'll even ask about it. :-)

Thanks a ton for all the advice! I'm actually pretty far along with the app; I'm still finishing up the essays. Hopefully I won't be too nervous and I'll be able to communicate who I am and what I want to do in my career effectively:).
