My Thoughts

I have an interesting story to tell. Neither of my parents went to college, and my father passed away suddenly last year. I have more life experience (own a house, moved to Washington DC to spread my wings, buried a parent) than loads of people a decade older than myself. I am a white male and will be twenty four years old in January.

My work experience (3 years at time of enrollment) is perhaps below average, but it has been intense. I have been to clients all over the country and have seen two completely different consulting fields while at Sogeti and Deloitte. In another year or two I will add more items to the list of things I have experienced but they chances of me actually moving into a management position are basically zero. I think I would gain more by moving on to an MBA than waiting in line to become a manager at a big four firm.

Please let me know your thoughts on how realistic getting into Harvard would be and what, if any, admissions consulting you would recommend.

THANKS!

jschraepfer,

Your numbers are solid, and your personal experiences (family, France) will provide color that will help you stand out, but HBS does not seem realistic to me. This is not because of your work experience per se -- as you know, HBS is open to younger applicants -- but because you appear to lack significant leadership experience either at work or extracurricularly. Given this, I would advise you to initiate something major outside of work that would showcase your leadership, or, if you need to apply now, lower your sights to more realistic schools.

I am the author of five admissions books, including the best-selling "Great Applications for Business School," and have been helping clients get into the top schools since 1997. I offer all services, from school selection and basic application strategizing to macro and micro edits and feedback of essays and recommendation letters. I also do interview prep, wait-list letters, application ding analysis, etc. I offer a basic rate of $180 per hour (can be lowered if you buy multiple hours) and flat-fee prices if you prefer those.
