Look at the development of the prompt.
"education offered by junior colleges just after the Second World War had a tremendous practical effect on family-run businesses"
OK, so the education had an effect on the businesses. Something about the businesses changed because of that education.
"After learning new methods ... the sons and daughters of merchants returned home, often to increase significantly the size of the family's enterprise"
So the sons and daughters learned "new methods" and then returned home to change the businesses. The businesses were changed because of "new methods". What kinds of methods? Methods of "marketing, finance and accounting", which are all business methods.
So the way junior college education affected businesses was by teaching sons and daughters new business methods which they went to on to apply at the family-run businesses, significantly increasing the size of the businesses.
So the prompt best supports answer choice E.
