by smtp722 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 12:50 pm
Has anyone studied and taken the GMAT in a month??
If so, what's your advice and your thoughts. Yes, i've got only a month but
i am also not working right now, so i am trying to study everyday.
Sounds crazy, i know but i gotta do what i gotta do right now with
time running out. :?

Hi,

I have taught many students over the years who have prepped in 1 month, though my first choice would to be to advise more time if possible. But nevertheless, I have seen plenty of success in a one month timeframe, it really depends upon you--what your current skill level is, and how much you put into it this month.

It's best to take an initial practice test to really diagnose what you need to focus on the most and how to prioritise. Then you'll want to plan out your month in detail, aiming for 1-3 hours/day, 5-6 days/week at least, perhaps longer sessions on the weekends. Aim to complete 4-6 CATs or therabouts during the month, spaced out approximately evenly. Spend time reviewing each CAT that you take (something many people neglect to do, to their detriment). Review the content you need to (math and grammar), focus then on strategies and timed question practice, and ensure you get sufficient computer-based practice. Let us know if you have more specific questions!

I agree with Jen -- one month isn't optimal (I think eight weeks is best), but I've certainly had many students show nice improvement in a month. A lot depends on your current skill level, foundational ability in math and English, and how efficiently you study.

thanks, Jim. I agree with you guys. I am taking the diagnostic and it doesn't look so great right now...on top of that, there are distractions on a daily basis that i haven't been the most disciplined. :( I am likely going to postpone my exam. My friends are telling me that i should just wait another year to apply and focus /study hard now to get a better score to get into a better school instead of rushing it. *sigh...
