Hi, C and D are out because of singular vs plural. E is too wordy. Amongst A and B, I choose A because in B "SO THAT THE... " makes the sentence a little more wordier than A.

I hope this helps !!

@DW, Can you please explore the singular/plural error in D?
Thanks.

Although D is also wrong bcoz of the structure.....A, and B
it seems A and B are reclusive events....

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

Actually, there is not a singular/plural error here, as "all kinds" is plural, and "are" is the plural form of "to be."

Nonetheless, to say "all kinds of paper are..." is awkward and is less preferable to the way the sentence is phrased in answer "A".

Of course, the second clause in the sentence is ungrammatical.

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
The problem with D is not the Subject-Verb Agreement, but look at the structure of the Bold part. It entirely changes the meaning of the sentence.
This kind of answers are categorized as Alter Intent Answers and they appear frequent in answer choices.

C and E have improper Subject verb Agreement
(C) Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single
E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single
(B) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash, many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced.

No proper reference as to what does the bold part refers to

So A is the answer

Let me know if further explanation is required

yes...... my doubt is the usage of "have" in the sentence. I thought simple past would suffice and chose B.

Can you explain why we should use "have tried"?

Thanks

Surya

Hello Surya,
Although I am not an expert, but still to my knowledge,I think when we are sure about an event which has occurred in the past and also got completed in the past only then we use Past Perfect.
This is the so called theoretical explanation.

Here "have tried" means the work was complete.

Also,it's true that we always prefer to use simple past rather than past perfect, but B has it's own drawback which I pointed out in my previous post.
The sentence has to be correct in all prospect and structure.
Even if the tense used is correct,it has no proper pronoun reference

So it's not wise to choose B

Hope now it's clear

yea.... i get it....

In A, it is " have tried recyling"

In B , it is " tried to recycle"

That is a very subtle difference. But how can one find the reference in A, if we cannot do it in B?
Best Regards,
Surya

I think you must check my first post where I explained all the options and the reason why I eliminated them.

For B. Look at the structure....the Bold part in my first post.

You will understand

As far a,it was structurally and grammatically perfect as compared to the the Options given
