Hi All,

Java_85 is correct. Here's why:

1) The subject of this sentence is the "stinger", but you have to put the modifier in the right *place*. In this case, the phrase "the heavily barbed stinger of the honeybee" is correct.

2) An -ing verb (called a 'gerund') is necessary because the SC is talking about a "timeless" act that can happen right now or in the future (you'll notice 2 gerunds here: 'stinging' and 'causing')

Underlined the incorrect part. Next time take care to underline.

Somehow I felt it is a trick question. I tried to make 3/2 splits.

Causes and causing

"the act of stinging causes"what?
Effectively causes should be followed by some result such as Hails causes damage. Sprain causes pain etc

Here causes cannot "cause" the bee to sustain injury.Somehow "with the result" does not seem appropriate usage here.

So I narrowed down to A and D by POE

Then, "As the honey bee's stinger is heavily barbed, staying..." seems bad composition, staying modifying barbed.

So I chose D.
