Eliminate A and B, usage of 'has' for rain and mild temperation, Correct usage is 'have'.
Eliminate E, 'them' referring to who? the country Japan? if yes, then country should be referred to as 'it'.
Remaining options C or D.
D sounds awrakd 'possible for raising'
IMO C.
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

I will solve this by seeing the skull of the sentence:

Japan's X and Y have produced Z and, despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils, it has made possible the raising of a variety of crops.

==> The blue colored part can be easily eliminated because this part is the non-essential modifier.

Then the sentence becomes:

Japan's X and Y have produced Z and it has made possible the raising of A.

What are the errors in this sentence?

Japan's X and Y ===SUBJECT

This subject has two verbs: produced and made.

If one subject has two verbs, we normally do not separate those verb by using comma between them.

example:
I have gone there and bought something.

So, #1 problem in this sentence is the use of comma before the second verb.
#2 problem is the use of "it". which is just repeating the subject.
#3 problem is the use of "it has made possible A"---> We make something possible, but we do not make possible something.

Now look for the option that has made compensated for those errors.

The options ABE are out.

We are between the options C and D. In D, "made it possible for raising" is not idiomatic.

So, answer is C.

Hey Perfect !,

I totally concur with the explaination regarding the separation of verbs with comma and use of "and" instead. But will you agree with me that the 1st problem that you have cited in the sentence hasn't been corrected in the option C too.

Before you come up saying, we need to go for the best available option :). I have asked this question just to make sure that we are still on the same page.

And besides that, do you think we should literally give so much importance to this comma punctutions as I vaguely recollect that in one of the forums "Stacey" has literally mentioned that GMAT hardly tests punctutions.

Thanks!
-Mani

@alivpriyada

There's a parallel thread going on for the same question which you could check out..

There's no doubt that C is best option..
