Ergonomic Society

The Ergonomic Society conducted a study that indicated that many people develop severe back problems during adulthood, and that virtually all such people who received chiropractic treatment showed great improvement. Therefore, in order to minimize the proportion of the population that suffers from back pain, the Ergonomic Society recommended that chiropractic treatment be directed toward those adults who suffer from severe back problems.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A) Any person who receives chiropractic treatment for back pain may also benefit from other forms of treatment.

B) Large insurance carriers cover chiropractic care for back problems to a lesser degree than they do other medical treatments.

C) Individuals who receive chiropractic or other treatment prior to developing severe back problems are not less likely to develop back pain than those who do not.

D) Chiropractic treatment is more effective in treating severe back problems when utilized over a long period of time, as opposed to sporadically.

I think it is C
it is the best
i used the process of elimination to get the answer

A is wrong because the argument does not talk about other forms of treatment

B the argument is not related to insurance

C

D the time period of treatment is not necessary

E Missing work days in not of any concern

So its C
because since the author of the argument says that

o minimize the proportion of the population that suffers from back pain, the Ergonomic Society recommended that chiropractic treatment be directed toward those adults who suffer from severe back problems.
if the chiropractic treatment was effective for people even before the adults develop severe back pain then she would otherwise recommend to those who did not have back pain...

Is it C???

IMO C

Well clearly applying process of elimination will limit our choices to either A or C, rest all are out of scope of the arguement.

Now between A and C ,

if you apply negation then only C weakens the conclusion, thus indicating that it is an assumption for the arguement,

To elaborate: Consider in case of C,
~C=Individuals who receive chiropractic or other treatment prior to developing severe back problems are less likely to develop back pain than those who do not. This thus weakens the conclusion stating "Ergonomic Society recommended that chiropractic treatment be directed toward those adults who suffer from severe back problems." which means is effective only after the person is suffering from back pain, its effective.

Hence C,

Observing the same in case of A,
~A=Any person who receives chiropractic treatment for back pain may NOT benefit from other forms of treatment.
This actually strengthens the conclusion hence not an assumption.

hope its clear, with this explanation, its based on whats given in CR Bible, however generally too C seems the best, even without the negation technique

See negation means whatever the answer choice is you make it 'not that' eg:
in case IF A, then you make it not A,
OR Id not A then you make it A

so in answer choice C which states:
"ndividuals who receive chiropractic or other treatment prior to developing severe back problems are not less likely to develop back pain than those who do not. '"
Negating it would mean:
ndividuals who receive chiropractic or other treatment prior to developing severe back problems are less likely to develop back pain than those who do not.

Now this negated sentence weakens the conclusion: i.e
Therefore, in order to minimize the proportion of the population that suffers from back pain, the Ergonomic Society recommended that chiropractic treatment be directed toward those adults who suffer from severe back problems.
which means its only effective when applied to people who already suffer from back pain and can't be prevented as stated.
This means this statement is an assumption since changing it effects the conclusion, hence it is related and not stated.
I hope its clear, why dont you refer Critical reasoning bible, its an excellent book.
