Since fanatics usually regard themselves as self- less patriots eager to die for their beliefs, fanaticism can rarely be controlled, however ruthless the countermeasures.
(A) however ruthless the countermeasures
(B) whatever the ruthless there is in the countermeasures
(C) no matter theat the countermeaures are ruthless
(D) in spite of the ruthlessness of the countermeasures
(E) even though there are ruthless countermeasures

[spoiler]Confused between A/E. Can someone explain which is right and which is wrong.[/spoiler]
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

I will go with E
A) seems awkward because it is not parallel and seems to miss a helping verb "are" in the end.
E) though wordy, makes good sense..

One point comes in mind is: E makes the underlined part a dependent clause and therefore COMMA before EVEN THOUGH not required. In fact from that we can drop B/C/E. Presence of COMMA shows we need a phrase. A better suits that.

i received a private message about this thread.

this sentence has a legitimate construction, although it's one that i've never seen in an actual GMAC exam. beware the "old paper tests"; they use lots of exotic sentence constructions that have no precedent in GMAC's current tests.

i don't have any idea how to analyze this type of modifier formally (i.e., i have no idea what it's called), but here is basically what's going on:

whatever the X means "no matter what the X may be".
for instance, Whatever the cost, I would like to buy that chair --> this is the same as "Regardless of the cost..."

however ADJ the NOUN is basically the same as "regardless of how ADJ the NOUN may be"
for instance, However obnoxious the style, this chair is beautiful --> this is the same as "Regardless of how obnoxious its style may be..."

again, let me emphasize that i have never seen a precedent for this construction in a modern GMAC exam, so it's definitely a low priority. but, there it is.
if you want to see lots and lots of examples, type the following search string (including the quotes) into google:
"however * the *"
