Hi...

what is between the commas, is the prepositional phrase...so block ,thinking as they did ,in both your answer choices and the correct answer will flash before you.

Drop the middle part and check if the sentence sustains.

The other one that you were confused about, use the same logic and you will realize this-

From the very beginning, is are wrong.

This is does not make any logical sense.
