Media analysis

by Dean Jones » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:12 am
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Analyzing campaign expenditures, the media has had as a focus the high costs and
low ethics of campaign finance, but they have generally overlooked the cost of
actually administering elections, which includes facilities, transport, printing, staffing,
and technology.
A. Analyzing campaign expenditures, the media has had as a focus
B. Analyses of campaign expenditures by the media has been focus on
C. In analyzing campaign expenditures, the media have focused on
D. Media analyses of campaign expenditures have had as a focus
E. In their analysis of campaign expenditures, the media has been focusing on

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice was option D

Regards
Deano.

D - IMO "Media analyses..have had... but they have overlooked...". Here THEY refers to "Media Analyses".

Lets ask ourselves 'can ANALYSES OVERLOOK THE COST...". IMO the subject & verb does not make sense in D.
IMO C

"Analyzing" implies something is continuing to happen, so "has had" is not correct.

"Analyses" is plural, so would not take the singular "has."

In D, "have had as a focus" is awkward, and does not match "have overlooked" which comes later.

It comes down to C and E, and E has the pronoun "their" which does not correctly refer to the singular "media." It must be C.

If "media" is a collective noun like "Jury" than how is C correct? Everything in C seems correct apart from "Have" and thats where the confusion stems from between C and D?

What's the source of the question?

Media is plular for "medium", therefore it is not collective like "jury". For that reason the answer IMO is C
