Panic in Rc performance---Need expert help

by champmag » Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:50 pm
My RC performance is giving me nightmares.

The strategy I am following to solve RC is:

1.) Read each paragraph actively and carefully.

2.) Extract the main point or the topic sentence of each para and how is it relevant to passage as a whole.

3.) Scribble short points of each para-though i dont normally refer back to it.

4.) While solving the questions refer back in case of spefic details or to re-read the line which the question is specifically mentioning.

I am using Rc 99 currently for reading comprehension. I am not getting satisfactory results with the strategy i am following. Sometimes the language of the high difficulty level passages is so tough that I tend to loose the main point of the para and the passage as a whole.

I would really appreciate expert guidance.

Welcome to the club. :)

I am no expert but let me try to help you as RC is a nightmare for almost everyone. I hate it. :) so cheer up.

Have you done OG 12 and Verbal OG? They have questions that are easier than RC 99 and are probably the right place to start RC.

If it is really difficult, get a study guide.
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

@vineeshp

Thanx for the encouragement.

Ya I have finished OG 12 and OG Verbal and started with RC 99. I am finding a lot of difference between the level of passages in OG and RC99.

Which study guide do u recommend for chalking a proper approach in RC?

Agree with Vineesh that its difficult to get a good guide for RC , there are dedicated books for RC in market but are loaded with very few practice materials.

Talking about strategy , it has to be done developed with practice and patience . You will have to try all possible strategies you can think of and then pick the best . It works diffrently for diffrent people , dn't just go by the guides giving you a strategy , cross check whether that works for you or not . Sometimes bookish strategy does more harm than good . Just my opinion.

Guides :- Kaplan verbal workbook , MGMAT RC , Veritas RC etc . I guess u must have gone thru these .

Even i am in search of good RC source :) .
Thanks & Regards,

From what I've gathered the type of RC passages you can expect on the actual GMAT (for a 700+ score) would definitely be more difficult than those in the OGs. Maybe closer to the medium-difficulty passages in the RC99. If your accuracy level on these mid-level passages is close to 75-80% then you don't need to worry, in my opinion.

Some of the high-difficulty passages in RC99 are really difficult so don't get too bogged down by these. On the positive side when you get these passages right your confidence level really shoots up. :D
