IMO D

You're comparing the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye with the color-discriminating apparatus of the insects' eyes.

In A and B color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye is incorrectly compared with the insects eyes.

C 'that' refers to 'color-discriminating apparatus'-which is singular hence you need depends. Plus the sentence should be that of the insects eye not just insect.

E. that of the insect's what?

I get the comparison part of the sentence..

but a COMMA before THAT in D ???? isnt that wrong in GMAT? or is there an exception to the rule.....

can anyone clarify plzzz.

"that" is functioning as a pronoun replacing "apparatus"

essentially, the sentence is:
Like the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye, the apparatus of an insect's eye depends on...
