In the figure attached, side AC of triangle ABC lies on line l. What is the value of y?
A. 22
B. 24
C. 25
D. 30
E. It cannot be determined from the information given.

Y=22.

x+x+40=180.

therefore x = 70.

again 5y+70=180. and it gives 22.

Yes, you can do the calculation, but plug the answers into the question is quite faster.

180 degrees in Triangle so x = (180 - 40) / 2 or x = 70
180 degrees in a straight line so y = (180 - 70) / 2

y = 22.

Since the angles of triangle ABC are of measures 40°, x°, and x°, and the sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle is 180°, it must be true that 40 + 2x = 180. Therefore, 2x = 140, or x = 70.
Since side AC of triangle ABC lies on line l, the angle measures x° and 5y° must add up to 180°. That is, x + 5y = 180. Since x = 70, it follows that 5y = 110. Therefore, y = 22, which is choice [spoiler](A)[/spoiler].
