In a certain accounting association, 40 percent of the members have passed the CPA exam. Among the members who have not passed the test, 50 members work at an accounting firm and the other 55 are still in school. How many members are in the accounting association?

a) 175
b) 200
c) 225
d) 250
e) 275

Please assist with above problem.

Say there are a total of T people in the association. If 40% have passed the test, 60% have not, so .60T have not passed the test.
If, of those who have not passed the test, 50 are working and 55 are in school, there are 105 who have not passed the test.

Now we know .60T = 105; (3/5) T = 105; T = 105 * (5/3) = 175; The answer is A

Among the members who have not passed the test, 50 members work at an accounting firm and the other 55 are still in school.
Thus, the total number of members who have not passed the test = 50+55 = 105.

40 percent of the members have passed the CPA exam.
Thus, the 105 members who have not passed the test constitute 60% of the total number of members:
105 = (60/100)x
105 = (3/5)x
x = (5/3)105 = 175.

The correct answer is A.

Hi alanforde800Maximus,

This question can be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

We're told that 40% of the members have passed the CPA exam, while the other (50+55 = 105) members have not. We're asked how many total members are in the association.

Let's TEST Answer B: 200 members

IF... there are 200 total members...
40% of 200 = 80
So there should be 120 other members. However, the prompt tells us that there are only 105 other members, so this answer is TOO BIG. We need fewer members; there's only one answer that fits...

Final Answer: A

40% passed exams
60% didn't = (50 +55)
(60/100)(x) = 105
x = 175

SO A
