Help me choose an MBA Program!

by devinmurphy2 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 1:45 pm
Hello all,

I was recently accepted to both schools I applied to: Portland State University (PSU) and Marylhurst University. I am now trying to make a decision between the two and there are many pros and cons for each. Mostly it comes down to cost vs. ranking. Portland State University (PSU) has a much higher ranking than Marylhurst but it is twice the cost ($50,000+ tuition vs. $26,000). I find both curriculums to be very similar and feel I would get a similar education from both. I just can't decide if a degree from PSU really will make the difference in terms of better job opportunities, etc. considering PSU itself isn't even a top school. At the end of the day, since neither are Ivy League schools-- will an MBA be an MBA on my resume? I just have a hard time justifying the extra price tag-- but would do so if I knew it would pay off in the long-run.

Any advice would be much appreciated-- I have to make a decision this week!

Thanks.

Well a few thoughts
First: You need to look carefully at both schools and see which ones best cater to your goals: meaning alumni salaries (especially in your field), who is hiring from the school (in your field).
Second: As neither schools are top programs, in general the rankings become less important as you go lower down. So I would go with saving the money in many cases (though not all)...

But like I wrote, priority A is that you be able to reach what you want to! If not, you might as well stay home :)

Thank you for this thoughtful reply. What is your suggestion about finding out what alumni salaries and who is hiring from the school? Would the admission department supply this do you think-- or is there a better resource out there? Many thanks!!

Well most schools DO release this info. You can check out sites such as Businessweek, Financial Times, etc. And many schools also publish employment reports in which you can find this info.
Once you h ave done that, make sure you speak to some peeps too, to get the "low down ont he ground" if you know what I mean...
