Bombed the GMAT- retake in 1 month?? still in doubt
Hi Blazingmat!
Am also exactly in the same position as you. I have attempted gmat twice.. First one i did not realize the seriousness of this killer test. So took it easy thinking its just high school english and math. I practiced only for 3 weeks and went for the exam with full confidence to see the result it was 380 (Q32 V11). I was not so disheartened because i didnot give my fullest.
The next time what i did was took 5 months to prepare , went to a tutor (not a gmat tutor for maths ), but to learn the basic concepts of math and did few old gmat past papers in the class. For english, I did some old princeton exam papers in which the english reading comprehensions were so long and complicated did not match anything to the standards now..
So thinking it will all improve my knowledge.. I followed the course and took a month extra to practice few recent papers to know my time management and well i do the paper . The first exam i did was the GMatprep 1 scored 385, then crack the gmat 450 , then i repeatedly practiced the gmatprep score ranging from 400-550 for 5 times.
Not losing my confidence even little. Went to the exam was happy seeing the AWA section completed it on time. (last time my score was 5). After the first 10 questions (even for the 10questions i took so long), the paper was very hard was happy that i can expect a decent score . and did 36 questions and had no time to do the 37th one.
FOr the verbal section , i managed the time and it well.. the paper was moderate for me... To my amazement when i clicked the next button , to my surprise i got a score of 340 (Q32 V16)... Oh my god !.. i was so devastated to the core.. felt like burst out crying looking at the score..
Still i couldnt come out of the shock and the pain it caused me... Am so depressed , my confidence level hard work all to the drain..
Even the next time i do it i would still have this fear since i had my fullest effort. Nevertheless, now i have got over it !.. and i this new energy to do beat the gmat. My target score is 550-600..
Since i found ur situation was similar to mine. would like to get some gmat study plans for a month ... If u dont mind can u share some tips with me..

Thanks for this thread. I feel that I do not get a whole lot out of the 700, 730, 760 score posts. I have taken two practice tests
(1-520, 2- 440) and am sitting the test in a few weeks.
I agree with several posters that the basics are an issue for us. However, if you have the time I would advise not worrying about time at the start of your prep. Take the time to understand what each question is asking. Once you get to know how the GMAT words questions your time will improve. It does you no good to work on a problem for 2 minutes, get it wrong, and then move on while you practice.
I am using the GMAT Math Bible by Jeff Sackman. He does a great job of debriefing the topics then giving you "drill" problems BEFORE giving you problems similar to the GMAT's style. You can take your time on the drill sections and then transition those skills into the real problems that you should be watching the clock.
I do not want to discredit the timing aspect of the GMAT, but I am offering another viewpoint.
All the best in your studies and remember it is just a test.
