Most Frequently Asked Topics in SC

by vineetmittal04 » Fri Jun 13, 2014 9:46 am
My Verbal section is very weak and I have just started doing the MGMAT SC Guide. I have very less time (2 weeks) left till my real GMAT test and I see a lot of chapters in this book. If someone could tell me the most frequently asked topics in SC on GMAT , I will focus on those topics first.

Regards,
vineet

Hi vineetmittal04,

SCs represent a large number of questions in the Verbal section (for most Test Takers, SCs are the most frequent questions in the Verbal), so to score at a high level you'll need to know grammar rules AND GMAT patterns for SC.

Most SCs will be based on a handful of major grammar rules (usually 2-4 per question); the good news is that you don't need to know all of the rules to get the question correct. In no particular order, the major grammar categories are: Verbs, parallelism/comparisons, pronouns, modification, style/idioms. Each of these categories can be sub-divided into sub-categories (e.g. "Verbs" includes subject-verb agreement and verb tenses).

This will be a lot of material to try to cover in 2 weeks. Do you have the flexibility to push your Test Date back?

No, I don't have the flexibility. I am working under a time constraint. But I will try my best. Thank you for your advice.

Hi vineetmittal04,

How have you been scoring on your practice CATs? And what is your score goal?

Hi vineetmittal04,

A 140+ point improvement in 2 weeks is not realistic. While I understand the nature of deadlines, it's important to define the REAL goal. I have to assume that your actual goal is to get a GMAT score that's high enough to improve your chances to get into Business School (your first-choice school and any others that you're planning to apply to).

There's no harm in taking your GMAT as planned, since Business Schools don't care if you take the GMAT more than once. However, if the likely scenario involves you continuing to study and then retaking the GMAT later, it might be better for you to just push your Test Date back and adjust your overall plan. At the very least, this will save you some money and remove some stress. You might also need to invest in some new GMAT study materials. It's difficult for most Test Takers to score 700+ on their own; most use some type of Course-based study (live class, self-study Course, tutor, etc.) to help them to succeed.
