Hypothetical Future

by anukrati » Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:53 am
Hi

I have doubt on hypothetical future tense.
In one of the Knewton prep I came across the below question.

The alarming findings of a new study indicate that a deadly disease, named "white-nose syndrome" for a fungus that appears on the body parts of hibernating bats, is spreading among Northeast bat populations so rapidly, largely because of bats' social behavior and migratory nature, that should the present rate of infection continue, the populations of the region's most common bat species will become extinct within the next 20 years.

(A) that should the present rate of infection continue, the populations of the region's most common bat species

(B) should the present rate of infection continue, the populations of the region's most common bat species

(C) should the present rate of infection be continued, then the populations of the region's most common bat species

(D) the populations of the region's most common bat species, were the present rate of infection continued,

(E) that the populations of the region's most common bat species, if the the present rate of infection did continue,

OA : A

The Doubt I have is for Option E.
In the official explanation by Knewton its given that "did continue" is in past and hence it cannot have future result "will become extinct".

Can anyone explain me this?

Also it would be great if someone can tell me all other such scenarios of hypothetical future.

Thanks
Anukrati

Hi anukrati,

The grammar is this SC is built around a "hypothetical future"; we can tell because the "intent" is that if something were to continue, then something else WILL happen in the next 20 years. This means that a certain combination of verbs will be required.

Here are some common ways to present "hypothetical future":

"If......then....."

eg. If you study more, then your score will go up.

"were.....would...."

eg. If you were to spend more time practicing, then your performance would improve.

This sentence uses the would WILL as it's second part, which means that we'll need a first verb that matches the hypothetical.

Answer choice A gives us that hypothetical: "SHOULD the present rate....CONTINUE." This is the hypothetical verb that we're looking for (the idea is stated in the correct format).

The first problem that I notice with Answer E is that the order of the ideas is wrong. Hypotheticals are usually "cause and effect" (if you do this thing, then this thing will happen). Answer E doesn't put the ideas in that order. Also, the word "did" is a past tense verb (you're thinking of how you speak the word "did" in conversation, which is not grammatically correct), and past tense is not correct for a hypothetical.
