I'm having difficulty with the word problems (work, distance etc.) some are straightforward but others I am quite challenged by.

I'm just wondering if there are any good books/web sites that can help with this technique. I don't have a strong mathematical background, would a tutor help? Just trying to find resources that can help with math, I guess...any feedback would be great.

Tutor would definitely help. I find personal coaching to be far more effective than a book when trying to learn GMAT math problems. I am totally biased here, but you could also see a definite benefit from a Veritas Prep course. Veritas is unique in that it allows you to take the math-only portion of the course which saves costs. Good luck.
