Retake Advice Needed

by seawolf » Sat Jul 21, 2012 1:09 pm
Hello,

I have taken the GMAT once, having scored a 700 overall (90%ile) and subscores of 42 V (95%ile) and 44 Q (66%ile). I am applying to Columbia Business School under the Early Decision program for August 2012.

Given the common '80/80 split rule' that I have read and heard about on forums and amongst applicants lately, is it necessary for me to retake the GMAT to achieve a more equal split and/or a higher quantitative score? Does Columbia place an emphasis on a certain minimum quantitative percentile?

Thank you for your assistance. Best of luck to my fellow applicants! =)

Regards,
Seawolf

Do you have any other areas that demonstrate your quantitative abilities? Solid grades in quant courses or a heavily quant-oriented job? Scoring in the 66th percentile for quant probably isn't a deal breaker, but you'd likely have to prove your abilities in other ways.

If you have time and are confident that you can bring it up, a retake may be something to consider. If not, just focus on your apps.

Hello,

I should have mentioned that I have already completed an accelerated dual-degree Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration which required several quant-heavy graduate courses including two semesters of biostatistics I/II (A- and A respectively) and MBA stats (A) taken this past academic year (2011-2012), yielding a 3.89 graduate math GPA. Further, I am hoping that this most recent and sustained academic performance shall compensate for the 66%ile GMAT quantitative score as well as a lower undergrad GPA (BS, 3.1 as a biology major with concentration in neuroscience).

Lastly, I am only applying to one program, namely Columbia Business School for August 2013 Early Decision admissions.

Given these circumstances, do you believe a retake is necessary? I wil not be submitting my CBS app until early September so I can still schedule a GMAT appointment at this time...
