Please help : GMAT in one month!!

by arrastra » Sat Jul 19, 2014 6:55 am
Hi,

I have one month left for my GMAT appointment.Below are my mock scores:
GMAT prep T1 : 640(Q47V32)
T2 : 660(Q47V34)
Manhattan T1 : 630(Q41V35)
GMAT expack1 : 640(Q47V31)

I have a target score of 700 but my scores are stuck at one place.Kindly suggest some ways to improve my score and how should i take my preparations forward into last month.

I have used these resources for my preparations till now:
SC Manhattan Guide;OG13;Jamboree material.
CR OG13,Jamboree
RC OG13 ,Jamboree
QA OG13,jamboree

Also, Please suggest if investing in eGMAT SC course is right investment at this point of time with only one month left to go.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Arrastra,

Although I believe that one month is too less for substantial improvement but since you take taken the date already therefore I would suggest that you must not join any classes or online course just based on feedback.

Your scores are good enough which require FOCUSED approach on your REAL PROBLEM AREAS for further improvement. Therefore I will strongly suggest that you must join the program that can focus on your real problem areas.

Not just Verbal but your Quant score also has some scope of improvement (to 49 Scaled score) that you might be overlooking.

In case you know your problem areas (e.g. SC) then you must take classes FOCUSED on the rules of SC that can help get a jump of about 3-5 points in Verbal section.

thanks for ur reply @gmatinsight..
I have narrowed down my problem areas in quant(numbers, standard deviation, etc) and am working on it.
in Verbal ,I believe I can do with some help on SC concepts as RC and CR will only get better with practice.
Only concern is the time . I have loads to do in little time thats why i am freaking out.

HI arrastra,

What is your Official GMAT Test Date? Do you have any flexibility to push the Date back (even a couple of weeks)?

While many Test Takers are unsure of themselves when it comes to the Verbal section, that part of the GMAT is just as standardized and predictable as the other sections of the Test. Your practice CAT scores show that you are approaching this process in a consistent way. To improve, you'll have to make some adjustments to how you deal with GMAT questions.

Most of your missing points are in the Verbal section, but there are some to be gained in the Quant section. Improving in the Quant won't be enough to get you to 700+ though. I'm curious if you have a pacing problem in any section of the Test?

Have you done a review/breakdown of your Verbal performances? How do you perform on each of the major question types (SC, RC and CR)?

You can collect the doubts and discuss with me in one class that I offer as free class to any aspirant.

For Verbal, I have suggested you already. Another suggestion is don't lose any more time now. :)

Thanks Rich.
I face pacing problem in quant but verbal i am able to finish off with some time remaining.
Yes i have reviewed my Verbal performances..on an average i get around 5-6 questions of sc incorrect 3-4 of CR and 3-4 of RC.For CR & RC I have started to practice more emphasizing on improving my reading and understanding of text. For SC I am planning to go for a short course to pick up some more concepts and apply existing concepts correctly.
Quant I have identified my weak areas such as numbers and am working hard to remember the basic concepts and practicing more to correctly applying those.

Please suggest if i am missing anything in the above plan. :? :?

My gmat date is 30th August and I do not want to push it forward because I am not working this month and I have all the time available for myself.I believe a lot can be achieved in a month with most of my time dedicated to preparations.

Hi arrastra,

You can certainly make some big improvements in the time that you have.

The Verbal section really does come down to a combination of knowledge (grammar rules for SCs, understanding the question types for RC/CR, etc.) and tactics (proper note-taking, understanding the logic behind prompts, understanding how to spot the common wrong answers, etc.). Test Takers who try to "wing it" in the Verbal section (picking an answer that "sounds good", narrowing down to 2 choices and then "guessing") usually can't hit a hit score.

However you choose to proceed with your studies, an emphasis on tactics, proper note-taking and organization are a must. You should also plan to take 1 FULL-LENGTH CAT per week. The bulk of your time should be spent on practice and review.

You mentioned that you usually finish the Verbal section early, which means that you're not taking advantage of the full 75 minutes. Finishing early is normally NOT a good sign. It implies that you were moving too quickly, making silly mistakes, not doing enough work, etc.

Before you purchase any new resources, you should take advantage of the various free samples, trial accounts, etc. that are offered. Then choose the one that best matches your personality, timeline and budget.
