GMAT Score:640
I am from India and have a GMAT score of 640. I am a mechanical engineer with five years of full time work experience most of which has been in energy and infrastructure sector. Post MBA I plan on pursuing a long term career in the same sector and play a leadership role in providing sustainable solution to demands of energy and infrastructure. My target schools are as follows:
1. Univ. of Texas-McCombs School of Business
2. Duke-Fuqua School of Business
3. UNC-Kenan Flagler
4. Univ. of Virginia-Darden
5. Univ. of Tornto-Rotman
Throughout my career I have actively participated in community and fund raising events and have a masters degree in engineering.

Could you please provide me with a feedback on my profile and how good my chances are in the school of my choices? If you have any recommendations for a better school then please feel free to advice. Please let me know of any suggestions for making a stronger application.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

Unfortunately, you will have two hurdles to overcome when applying to the schools you have chosen. First, their average GMAT scores are 30-60 points higher than yours. Second, you will be competing against a large pool of applicants from India with technical backgrounds. Those applicants on average will have much higher GMAT scores than you do.

That does not mean you won't get into those schools. it does mean that your chances are not strong and if you want to go to business school next year you should add a couple of "safety" schools to your list: schools with GMAT scores closer to yours.

You should research schools that have close ties to the energy industry. Your energy background could help you there. Also check beyondgreypinstripes.org. Their website rates schools on their environmental and social orientation. That can help point you toward excellent schools that are interested in sustainable energy.

Good luck,

Thank you very much for your response. The schools that I have shortlisted have dedicated energy programs. I realize that my scores are short and a higher score will definitely improve my chances. Is there anything that you would recommend me to fill the void of lower score?
Thank You

Your best approach will be to highlight your energy experience and how that relates to the curriculum and career opportunities you see through the school based on the specific energy program. If they are going to overlook your stats it will be because of your industry background so you need to make a clear and compelling case for why you would bring needed expertise to the classroom.
