VERY SIMPLE SQUARE ROOT QUESTION

by MRED » Mon May 26, 2008 10:49 am
How would you calculate the square root of 13.60? My calculator tells me it is 3.7, and that is correct, but how is that calculated? I tried to duplicate that answer using long-hand division, and I just can not do it.

Usually these questions can be answered by looking at the choices offered.

So you know that the square of 3 is 9 and the square of 4 is 16. So, first you must eliminate any answers that are <3>=4. This should typically leave you with only a couple of answers. From these you can calculate by actually calculating the squares of the possible answers and checking which comes closest to the 13.6.

Hope this helps!
