choosing between tepper and marshall

by v1shwanath » Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:29 am
i am an international applicant looking at a marketing/product management role in technology industry.
marshall holds a strong appeal appeal for me as i have immediate family in l.a, and therefore a great support system. i can practically land there a day before the program begins and manage.
at pittsburgh, i need to begin from scratch.
yet, purely based on the strength of the curriculum, (numerous tech oriented management courses), i am inclined towards tepper.
tepper will eventually work out to be much costlier than marshall. because of scholarship aid and family support, marshall will be arnd 55k cheaper than tepper.

should i just select a school irrespective of the cost?

does marshall's alumni network, and its proximity to silicon valley negate the advantages of tepper's strong tech-oriented program?

You can't go wrong academically with either choice, and you will likely develop the same skills at either school, so in that respect, you can't lose. You suggest already what I would be considering if I were you, and that is, where do the graduates of each program typically find employment? If you are targeting specific firms post MBA, you should contact the career services office at each school to confirm those companies recruit there. Also try to find out how much concentration of the alumni base is in the geographic area of choice for you as well as in the industry of choice. The cost factor is more of a present problem than a long term problem. In choosing the better school for your long term career opportunities, you should more than make up for an extra $55,000 in current costs. Hope this helps.
