Rd 3 Advice

by bschoolprofile » Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:07 am
Hi All,

I've been preparing to apply to Haas and Anderson in round 3. I have two specific questions to ask. First, am I a viable candidate for either in Round 3? Here's my data:

- GMAT 770 (Q50, V44)
- 3.3 in Computer Engineering from top 5 US-university
- 7 years work experience in non-profit sector; 3 years of program management/supervising a small number of direct reports
- Extracurriculars in the same vein as my work life
- White, Male
- Career Goal is to be the ED of a non-profit org

And two, what suggestions do you have specific to a Round 3 application - are there specific things that I'd want to mention/highlight in my essays or the optional essay?

I've heard that it's important to explain why you are applying in Round 3 as opposed to Round 2 but I'm not sure in what space to do that. For me, my interest in b-school is a recent phenomenon. Until this year I hadn't considered the possibility, but through some sound advice and personal investigation, I think b-school is the thing to get me where I want to go in the non-profit world. Since I'll be 7 years out of school by this June, I'd prefer not to wait another year but would love to hear your thoughts.

Best,
B

No. You do not need to "explain" your timing decision on why R3 and not R1/R2 to the school. However, you should recognize that most of the seats are taken from previous rounds and you are fighting for very few remaining seats with not only fellow R3 applicants but also the wait listed folks from the earlier rounds. Also, since the chances of R3 admits are low you might want to think if you do not get in, would you want to use the "stale" stories to apply for R1 in couple of months or skip R3 and apply in R1 with full force?

Having said that, you have very strong profile and Non profit sector work experience may just give you the edge in R3 by when schools have already admitted their traditional IB/Finance/Consulting guys through previous two rounds and seeking out something different.

Good luck!
